Step 5 - Audio and Time

  1. There is a sound panel located on the left-hand side of the screen which is by default turned off in ArcSeer. Left-click your mouse over the speaker icon to turn the sound on (see below). If your avatar is located on the high ground you may hear the whistling of the wind. Down in the valleys there is less wind and it will be quieter. You may also catch the cry of a gull from time to time as the virtual seabirds pass by overhead.

  1. The bottommost panel is labelled ‘Hour of the day’ and this will give you a rough idea of what time it is. When ArcSeer first launches, the time is set to 8 in the morning. As you spend time in the ArcSeer virtual environment, you will notice that this marker moves slowly from left to right. You may also notice that this passage of time is reflected in the position of the sun in the sky. Eventually it will become night and the sun will disappear into the west and the night sky and stars will appear (see below). Time in the ArcSeer environment moves faster than in reality but it still may take a considerable amount of real-world time for night to fall. If you get bored of waiting, you can left-click your mouse on the time marker and drag it left or right to change the time of day. Both the passage of time and the environmental audio features have been included to afford the user a more experiential interaction with the site.
